Blog Domain Name Guide
This article is a guide to domain names as they relate to blogs. As I have mentioned before, I believe that blogging on a free weblog platform like blogger.com is a big mistake, primarily because you do not own the domain name and therefore are not building equity in your own blog brand. In this article I have created three videos to guide you through the process of selecting, registering and configuring your blog domain name. Before You Begin Choosing a blog domain name is the second most important decision of your blogging career. The first is to choose your topic, so for this article we will assume that you know your subject and are ready to decide on the blog’s domain name and get it registered and pointed at your hosting account so you can begin to use WordPress. Choosing A Blog Domain Name In this video I log on to two of my favorite blog domain name brainstorming tools. They are both slightly different and they will speed up the process of finding a name and help you come up with word combinations and synonyms that you wouldn’t normally think of on your own. 1. Registering A Domain Name for Your Blog Registering a blog name is a relatively simple process, that will be straight-forward for anyone that has done any e-commerce or online shopping. There are a couple tips that I cover in this video that are worth catching. Most people, would consider Fantastico a WordPress hosting essential feature. Web Hosting Reseller Account – If you intend on creating many blogs or would like to share, or even sell hosting with one or more friends, then you may want to consider a reseller hosting account. This special type of hosting account allows you to divide your account and provide separate access to other people. WordPress Hosting Advanced Features Some other terms that you may see when looking at WordPress hosting options are things like: Dual Processor Server – this is definitely a nice bonus if it is included in your hosting account as it should keep your site running fast, even in the event of a big traffic spike like getting on the front of Digg. Here’s a great question I received from a someone who is considering getting started with their own hosted WordPress blog and is concerned that technical skills will be a limitation on their blogging: I am reasonably computer literate and am often the “go to” guy for my friends and their computer problems (hardware and software) but when dealing with the “behind the browser” aspect of the web, I am concerned. I have no experience. To break it down even further the main things I am worried about are SEO, making adjustments to WordPress and the website once it is set up and finally what I will have to know about HTML, CSS etc. I don’t have a clue. I am steadily adding to my arsenal of content for the blog I want to start, I have my URL, I am going to have you to set up WordPress when I sign up for hosting but the fear above is holding me back. If there is anything you can do concerning this aspect of blogging I would greatly appreciate it. Any suggestions? Here is my reply: Let me say that it’s great that you are taking the time to address and consider these things before you get started blogging. I wish I had done the same thing. In some ways people like you who have some technical skills are at a disadvantage when blogging, because we know that it is possible to tinker with EVERYTHING and think that we should be doing that. My advice would be to realize that all the things you mentioned above are highly secondary to the things that will make the biggest difference in your blogging success: 1.) Producing great content 2.)
